Activities and clubs play an important part of the student experience here at PHES. There are a variety of options for student to choose from. The following are activities or clubs for the school year:
- Fun With Books Club
The purpose of this club is to provide enrichment opportunities from books that students read. Experiences such as making various styles of books and extending the themes of the book through cooking experiences will be performed during meeting times. This club is open to First and Second grade students who are interested. Club times will include two sessions that run from 3:00 - 4:30 during after school times. No more than 10-12 students can attend a session.
- Music Club
Music clubs provides an opportunity for Patrick Henry Elementary School students to participate in music activities outside the regular classroom curriculum. Currently we meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1500-1600 but the day and times may change depending on the nature of the activity. Our first project is a choral concert on December 17, 2006 at the Rosengarten Concert Hall in Mannheim. A German men's choir invited fifty of our students to sing in their annual concert. Fifty invititations were given to students based on pitch matching and vocal ability. Only fourth and fifth grade students were invited. Normally, music club acitivities are open to all students and grade levels but the size of the concert stage limited the number of students to fifty. Music club will perform throughout the year for parents and students and it is our goal to provide students with an enjoyable music experience while at Patrick Henry Elementary school.
- Student Mentors
We have a peer mentor program that will begin in January 2007. This club is open to fifth grade students who have an interest in mentoring younger grade level students, is responsible, and can read at a 4th grade level. Parents are required to sign the applications. Once a student is selected for the program, the counselors then provide training on how to work with younger students. This training includes how to listen, how to give praise and encouragement, how to do guided reading, and general rules of conduct. The primary teachers are given a Peer Mentee nomination form. The teachers list any child who might benefit from having a fifth grade mentor. The fifth graders come to the childs class once or twice a week for a 20 minute period. Most mentoring occurs during the fifth grade recess time. Some teachers will allow their students to mentor at other times during the school day.
- Homework Club
The Homework Club is for interested second and third grade students who would like extra help with their homework. We meet every Tuesdays from 2:30-4 in room 121. Students bring their homework, a healthy snack, and a book to read after their homework is completed. Any student who applies will have a reserved spot in the club.
- Math Club
This is for 4th and 5th graders who were identified by their teachers as needing additional help in Math. We meet from 2:45 - 4:00 every Tuesday. Math Club is limited to 20 students, as some students require one on one assistance. The purpose of Math Club is for working on building a firmer foundation in NUMBERS, a SENSE of NUMBER, and the 4 OPERATIONS. Many of the activities are hands-on, mental math, work alone and in pairs or triplets. Students work 20 minutes each time in the computer lab with chosen programs on the 3, 4, 5th grade level Math Interactive and the Shroeder program, Math Interactivate.
- Adult Mentors
Adult mentors are selected to provide young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforecement and constructive esample. Mentors are caring individuals who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already within themselves. Parents or teachers (with parental consent) can recommend 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students for the Adult Mentor Program. The Adult Mentor Program usually starts in November. Mentors typically meet with students during their lunch/recess period one day per week. The program concludes in late May or June with a trip to Teamwork Towers.
- Math Olympiad
Math Olympiad is a program to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for math problem solving. There are five contests beginning in November 2004 and ending in March 2005. Children use their problem solving skills to solve five time problems. Problems are geared to 4th and 5th grade math skills. Before contests we practice different methods of problem solving. Children who love math and have strength in this area are welcome to participate. This is not a computation program. Currently, there are twenty-nine students participating in Math Olympiad.
- Puppet Drama Club
The Puppet Drama Club is an after school enrichment program which offers students an opportunity to produce a professional, quality puppet drama program for our school. This enrichment class is offered to 3rd through 5th grade students. Participants are required to share their talents with students at our school.
- Problem Solving Club
The purpose of the after school club, BOARD GAMES, is to promote friendships, skills in playing a variety of board games, and good sportsmanship among peers. Some of the games of choice are checkers, chess, Scrabble, Connect Four, Quizmo, Backgammon, Dominos, 24 Game, Simon2, Pictionary Jr., Where in the World is Carmen San Diego, Sorry, and The Game of Ocean.
- Spanish Club
Patrick Henry Elementary School will sponsor a Spanish Language and Culture Club starting on Wednesday, January 10th for children in grades 3-5. There will be two groups one will meet from January 10th to February 28th and the other one from March 14th to May 9th. The number of students will be limited to 18 per group. The club is scheduled to meet after school every Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Parents are responsible for students’ transportation home after the club meeting.
- Running Club
The purpose of the Running Club is to engage students in a sports activity that they can easily do, which promotes a healthy lifestyle. There are currently 85 to 90 students enrolled in the after school club. The goal for the students is to build their stamina for physical endurance through running. Students from all grade levels are represented in the Running Club.
- Skate Club
Skating club provides each student with a supportive environment where he or she can learn to skate at his or her own pace. Grades 2 and 3 meet every Mondays starting January 22 except for 1st Mondays of the month. Grades 4 and 5 meet on Wednesdays, starting January 24th. Skating will begin after school and go until 3:45. We will be skating in the gym each week until Spring time and weather permitting we will walk to the skate park here at Patrick Henry Village. Skate Club provides an atmosphere designed to help each student maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle for a lifetime. ermission slips are required.
- Student Council
Two students from each 4th and 5th grade classroom are elected by their peers to represent their class at the weelky student council meeting. Students meet and perform various community service activities (paper recycling, park clean up etc.). Students also plan various "school spirit day" activities.
- Puzzle Club
Children work with all types of puzzles. Puzzles that were chosen require some type of problem solving skills, as opposed to games of chance. Some puzzles can only be done alone; others may require partners or up to four people. Most of the puzzles involve manipulatives, some are on paper, and some are on the computer. Participants submit a permission slip and names are pulled from a hat. We have about 35 students participate each week.
We meet for 1 hour and 20 minutes each week. 4th and 5th graders participated the first set of 8 weeks; 3rd and 4th graders during the second set of 7 weeks; 2nd and 3rd graders during this third set of 7 weeks; and we will end the final session of 7or 8 weeks with a mixture of 2nd through 5th graders.
- Board Game Club
- Peer Mediators
- After School Reflection Sessions
Students often require additional and special guidance in identifying and improving upon disruptive, inappropriate and harmful behaviors. Many times, students are not aware of the impact that their inappropriate behaviors have on classmates and adults in school, home, and community settings.
The Patrick Henry Elementary School Reflection Program will assist students in identifying those behaviors and/or actions, which have impacted on their efforts to be successful in the educational setting. If, school administrators, counselors and the school psychologist feel that a student requires more intervention in a structured setting, they will refer students to the program.
Throughout the reflection sessions (one hour two times per week) students will be given the opportunity to openly discuss concerns and how to problem-solve in a safe environment. Hopefully, the students will develop a more positive attitude toward school, peers, and adults. Success and progress will be measured by the student's positive interaction with adults and peers at school and in the community.
NOTE: After school activities/athletics for middle school and elementary school age students are the responsibility of Youth Services. DoDDS-E does not have authority nor does it receive funding to initiate such services.
