Program Description: For the school year 2004-05, Patrick Henry Elementary School will continue to provide a first and second grade partial German Language Immersion class. One half of the instruction day is conducted in English in the content areas of reading, language arts, and the the specials. The other half of the day is conducted in German in the content areas of mathematics, social studies, science and health.

Purpose: The purpose of the Language Immersion Program is to introduce a new language to non-speakers of the German Language. It is not intended to maintain a foreign language in which the child is already proficient.

Enrollment: This is a two-year program and requires that the sponsor have a DEROS of at least two year remaining. Students diagnosed with auditory processing difficulties may need additional screening before consideration can be given. Students enrolled in speech, or having a language impairment, are generally not recommended for the program. Applications are available in the office or on the Forms page.

Selection: Eligible students for the first year of Germany Immersion are selected at random by a panel. For entry into the second year of German Immersion, only students who have had some German language experience will be considered.

Purpose: Research has shown that multi-age classrooms have numerous aspects which benefit children. Students have the opportunity to stay with the same teacher for multiple years and are evaluated based on their own continuum of learning. The boys and girls have numerous opportunities to become autonomous and self-directed learners.

Enrollment: Parents must complete an application form and have a DEROS date of at least two years from the time of application. Applications are available from the main office or registrar.

Selection: Applications are screened by the multi-age teachers and administration to ensure a balance for each class.

Standardized Testing

TerraNova Test: The Terra Nova is national norm-reference test of basic skills which is administered to students in grades 3-12. The test is normally given in the Spring and results are provided to parents at the end of the school year.

Scholastic Reading Inventory: The Scholastic Reading Assesment (SRI) test is given on the computer for students in grades 1-5. It is primarily a reading comprehension exam and the results are given in terms of a lexille score. The score allows students to choose reading selections which closely match the skills of the student.
